The first of two races run by the team was the JV developmental race. Harrisonburg’s JV team captured four of the top ten spots and ended a dominant showing with a second place finish. The streaks were led by senior WIll Turner, who took first place. Seniors Erik Garcia, Connor Bell, and Leo Lopez all finished in the top ten as well. The girls JV team also took second place, led by a strong performance from freshman Morgan Heckman, who came in 6th.
An hour later, the boys varsity race started and was close down to the wire. Junior Daniel Richards, a runner from Broadway who earned 16th place in the state meet last year, led the pack for the first two miles and looked strong, but started to falter in the third mile and ended up with a third place finish.
But Harrisonburg, led by by seniors William Imeson and Nevin Heckman and juniors Jonas Zimmerman and Jordan Leaman, stayed in the race and worked their way up to the front. Imeson finished the race with a strong 6th place performance and a personal best time of 18:12, closely followed by Zimmerman in 7th place. Heckman and Leaman got 10th and 11th place, respectively.
The Streaks boys team had never before won the EMHS invitational, and news of the deed was met with cheers of jubilation.
“I called it,” said Nevin Heckman. “I predicted earlier in the week that we would win and what do you know, I was right.”
The JV team’s second place finish was helped in large part by Lopez, a first year member of the team who ran track as a sprinter in the fall. His first 5k race ever was at Waynesboro, a mere three days before the EMHS invitational.
“I really enjoy running [the 5k],” Lopez said. “Cross country is so much different from sprinting and I’ve started to like it more.”
The Streaks will continue their season with a meet at R.E. Lee on Wednesday, September 14th at 5:30.
