The HHS cheerleaders travel to New Orleans for a unique experience.

Cheerleaders perform in BCS Bowl's halftime show.

On January 6, the HHS cheerleaders flew to New Orleans, LA and began preparations for their performance during halftime at the National Championship BCS Bowl.

The BCS Bowl is a collegiate football series in which ten teams compete in a five-game showcase, and the top two competitors go helmet -to-helmet in a playoff game. This year, Alabama and Louisiana State competed at the Super Dome in New Orleans on January 9.

HHS’s varsity cheerleading team was invited to perform during the BCS Bowl in the middle of the competitive season prior to the district tournament. In order to raise the $1500 necessary for plane fare and costumes, the cheerleaders brainstormed fundraiser ideas, and head coach Bridget Smith selected the best idea. The team decided to sell cookies and fudge, and purses out of a ThirtyOne catalogue. Each teammate was accountable for selling at least 30 boxes of cookies, but if any of the athletes sold 40 or more, they were rewarded with an Under Armour sweatshirt.

“It was hard to raise that much money because not everyone liked what we were selling, and the people we sold one thing to we wouldn’t want to go back and sell something else to,” senior captain Gentry Dove said. “Me and three other girls spent about five hours going door-to-door selling cookies one day. We all worked really hard.”

A little over a month prior to the BCS Bowl, Smith and assistant coach Devon Skelly received a video of the routine they would be performing during halftime.

“We gave each of the girls a copy of the DVD,” Smith said. “David Scott choreographed it. He choreographed the Step Up movies and was also on So You Think You Can Dance.”

The cheerleaders worked on learning the dance at each other’s houses over break, and rehearsed the routine several times during scheduled team practices at HHS. As opposed to being taught by an instructor step-by-step, the cheerleaders repeatedly watched select parts of the video and mimicked the dancers’ moves.

“The girls in the video danced the whole way through the routine without stopping and giving any advice or instruction,” senior captain Evan Wetsel said. “That made it really hard to learn.”

The dance was comprised mostly of body rolling and hip-hop based moves; however, the Scott also incorporated cheerleading stunts and tumbling into the routine. Each cheerleader was required to pack black tennis shoes, black spandex, and their performance dresses for the trip. In addition, the entire team had to match for rehearsals.

The entire trip stemmed over five days. The team left Harrisonburg, VA at 2:00 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6 and carpooled to the Dulles Airport. From there, the cheerleaders took two flights – from Dulles to Atlanta, GA, and from Atlanta to New Orleans; they arrived in the Big Easy at 12:00 p.m.

“The plane ride was crazy! Some of the girls were freaking out because they’d never been on a plane before, but we were all really excited to go,” junior Sarah Bell said.

Once they arrived, the team checked in at the hotel and left to take a tour of the swamp. After the tour, the team returned to the hotel, changed, and headed to their first dance rehearsal, which lasted three hours. On Day 2 of the trip, the cheerleaders had practice from 8 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., and then went on a trolley ride to a cafe and took a steamboat tour to eat dinner. The following day, the team had an eight hour rehearsal from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Afterwards, the athletes were surprised with tickets to a Cee-Lo Green concert, succeed by a traditional Cajun dinner and dancing.

“The Cajun dinner was really cool because it was a completely different culture and the music sounded like something I’d never heard before,” Dove said.

During rehearsals, the choreographer instructed each of the athletes through every move, ensuring they fully understand all the skills and movements.

“[Our choreographer] was really fun, but there was a point where he had to be strict too so we could get it done. We all liked him because he was funny and laid back about a lot of things,” Dove said.

On the fourth day of the trip, the team boarded the charter buses at 8 a.m. for a four hour dress rehearsal at the Super Dome. The team had about two-and-a-half hours of free time before they had to prepare for their performance. The team of seventeen got dressed and did their hair and makeup before being whisked away to dinner with the other teams performing during halftime. Before their BCS Bowl performance, the team had put in almost twenty hours of preparation in only three days.

“When we did our hair and makeup, it made us all more excited. Our makeup was really ridiculous, but we had to do it because the stadium lights flush out your face. When we went to dinner and saw all the other hundreds of cheerleaders and dancers dressed up too, it was amazing. We were even able to watch the game on a huge screen during dinner, which was cool, because a lot of us are Alabama/Louisiana State fans,” Dove said.

After dinner, everyone was rushed to the backstage of the stadium.

“All of us had to fit in a small tunnel under the seats until halftime,” Wetsel said. “We could see the clock and the game and everything. It was really amazing.”

As soon as the second quarter ended, the cheerleaders rushed onto the field to perform the routine, a culmination of the team’s hard work and dedication.

“I think all of us had a huge adrenaline rush. It was pretty much the best feeling in the world. Looking around and knowing all the spectators were watching us was unreal,” Dove said. “During the performance, I was just having fun with it and concentrating on the steps, but at the same time, I knew i would never be able to do it again.”

After spending an additional day in New Orleans eating at Hard Rock Cafe for lunch and sightseeing on Bourbon Street, they flew out at 6 p.m. and arrived back in Harrisonburg at 1:30 a.m.

“It was nice to be home, but [performing during halftime] was definitely my highlight of the year. I got to be in New Orleans with seventeen of my best friends,” Dove said.

Griffin III was the right man for the Heisman trophy award.

There were two strong competitors for the Heisman trophy.

The 2011 Heisman trophy was highly contested; the award that goes to the nation’s most outstanding player was up for grabs until the very end. Going into last Saturday night’s presentation ceremony, no analyst could be entirely certain as to which player would take home the hardware. The two players that it would come down to were both quarterbacks: Andrew Luck of Stanford, the preseason favorite, and Robert Griffin III of Baylor, one of the race’s dark horses.

Luck was last season’s runner up to Cam Newton, and returned for his junior year to earn his degree and polish his game. Unanimous among analysts as the projected number one pick of the upcoming NFL draft, and potentially the most complete quarterback ever in college, it is hard to vote against Andrew Luck. But at the end of the day, Griffin III, or “RG3” as he is known, deserved to tote the Heisman more than the prized Luck. The hard evidence for Griffin III lies in his statistical superiority, and his team peaking late in the season to overshadow Luck’s performance in November.

Luck is the most anticipated player to enter the draft for a reason: the man cranks out incredible passing numbers. However, RG3 threw for 800 more yards than Luck (3,998), threw one more touchdown (36), and threw three less interceptions (6). If Griffin III continues his stellar play in Baylor’s bowl game, he will set a new NCAA pass efficiency record, with his rating currently at 192.3. Griffin III also rushed for 644 yards and 9 touchdowns, as opposed to Luck’s 153 yards and two touchdowns. On paper, RG3 wins the battle for the Heisman.

However, as previously mentioned Luck was the preseason favorite, and his Stanford team climbed the ranks of the top ten throughout the season. Griffin III’s Baylor Bears suffered three mid-season losses, but finished with an offensive flurry, notching historic wins over Oklahoma and Texas. The victory over the number five Sooners was the first in Baylor’s history, after previously being 0-20 versus Oklahoma. As the Bears rose to the occasion, Luck and Stanford’s undefeated season and title hopes were crushed by a big loss at home to the Oregon Ducks. Luck threw two interceptions and fumbled once, his worst performance of the season in the Cardinal’s biggest game. Luck’s struggle on the national stage allowed his previous lead in the Heisman standings to crumble, and Griffin III seized his opportunity, throwing for 320 yards and two touchdowns in his last regular season game.

These two quarterbacks were both clear contenders for the Heisman trophy, standing above other phenomenal talents across the country. Griffin’s sheer numbers and performance late in the season earned him the right to be called the nation’s most outstanding player.

The HHS swim and dive team gets ready for a new season, and hopes for new recruits.

Junior Emma Peifer swims during a swim practice. Photo by Sydney Knupp.

The smell of chlorine wafts in the air as many HHS swimmers prepare for the upcoming season. Many swimmers train for this season by working out at the Wellness Center and Golds Gym, both of which have indoor pools. Weight training is also offered two days a week for those swimmers willing to train, some are even taking the opportunity to take Zumba classes.

”Any type of conditioning is beneficial, athletes in fall sports are already keeping their bodies in some sort of physical shape,” second year swim coach Richard Morrell said. The HHS swim team will train five days a week under the bubble at Westover Pool Complex, from 3-5pm during the regular season that starts November 7th.

Winning the district is every high school teams goal, but it may be harder for the swimmers at HHS this year. The Lady Streak swimmers lost over half of their competitors due to a large group of graduating seniors. Claire Glick, Joanna Hernandez, Sydney Little and Emma Peifer are the only returning swimmers. These ladies will have to step it up this year as well as acclimate any newcomers to the team. On the other hand, the boys team lost only two seniors to graduation. There are seven returning swimmers and overall the boys have a brighter outlook in the district. Spotswood High School swimmers are still the strongest team overall, with Waynesboro and Turner Ashby being equally difficult to compete against. Winning the district will be difficult, not only for the HHS swim team, but also for all the other winter sports. The larger number of schools in the new expanding district complicates the path to a championship. But Coach Morrell has many expectations for this year.

“I hope to see more swimmers on both the men’s and women’s teams. I expect to see more school records broken, and I expect to see every swimmer finish their district tournament meet with a personal best swim time. Most of all, I expect to see the team members have fun as they strive to do their best.”

Morrell doesn’t intend to revise last year’s overall scheme for the 2011-2012 season.

”Nothing new is planned. The fact that the team has a coach committed to the program for more than a single season, should help in the long run. Consistency is the key to building and strengthening the program and that is what we are doing through our practices and competition,” Morrell said.

Basketball guys gear up for this new season.

The Harrisonburg High School boys basketball team is about to take the court in the newly expanded Valley District. With perennial powers Waynesboro and R.E. Lee back in the district, it will be much tougher to win the district title. Head coach Kevin Tysinger, entering his fourth season at the helm, is optimistic.

“I have high expectations for this season. I think we have a good shot to win the district. I think the expansion of the district makes it even more competitive and adds a little more excitement to our push for a title,” Tysinger said.

The team lost quite a few seniors to graduation, most notably Michael Holmes, Jake Johnson, and Scott Measell. This year’s team will have to find production, most notably in the form of scoring, from new contributors as well as returning players. Seniors will be relied on to provide leadership.

“Corbin Whitelow and Salim Charles will be expected to lead this season. Not only do they have the skills to lead, but also a great deal of experience. I’m also expecting big things from juniors Seth Kardos and Issiah Smith,” Tysinger said.

Underclassmen will have the chance to compete for playing time and provide a spark off the bench. Coach Tysinger is waiting for a younger player to step up.

“It’s too early to tell who will get significant playing time. I do think we have a few guys that will be able to contribute, but I’m not sure as to how much just yet,” Tysinger said.

Personnel is the driving force in determining what kind of system a team runs and this year’s team appears to be athletic, if nothing else, at every position.

“I think our team is versatile enough to run and gun with anyone, but also has the ability to run a half court set. Our defense will dictate a lot of whether or not we will run. I would really like to press on defense this season,” Tysinger said.

The team appears to be deep at the guard position and a little thin in the post. Rebounding, due to being one of the smaller teams, will be a driving factor in determining how successful a season the boys basketball can team will have. If they can limit other teams to one shot each time down the court than the Streaks will have a chance to make a deep postseason run. Chad Summers, a HHS alumnus that played hoops for the Streaks, will be Tysinger’s full-time assistant for the second consecutive season.

The definition of gymnastics is to obtain the skills of tumbling and balancing, and to display flexibility, grace, and strength. Head gymnastics coach Michael King and assistant coach Alison Whalen focus on teaching the gymnasts to acquire these skills as they further their gymnastics careers. Preseason practices have already started, but official practice will start Nov 7.

“I am really excited for this gymnastics season. I have been doing gymnastics since I was six, and I always look forward to improving my technique, “ sophomore Chloe Scanlan said.

“I think being on the gymnastics team is going to be really fun. Last year when I came up as an eight grader I had to stop early because of a sprain, so I am really excited for this season. I go to Skyline Gymnastics every Saturday. My goal for this season is to be able to do my back handspring on beam,” freshman Meagan Roberts said.

Although the gymnastics season hasn’t started yet, some of the gymnasts still take time out of their day to get extra practice. Roberts, Scanlan, and several of their teammates participate in Skyline Gymnastics, a clinic that is held at Stone Spring Elementary School and is run by Michael King and Jill Dean. The clinic is dedicated to advancing gymnastics skills, body strength, and the gymnasts’ knowledge of their sport

“I think our team is going to do really well this year. We lost a couple good seniors last year, but we have some freshman joining that are really talented,” Scanlan said.

Last year four team members were state qualifiers. Two of those four are still on the team, senior Gentry Dove and sophomore Chloe Scanlan. All though gymnastics is a team sport, overall individual scores are more important.

“I feel like I stand a better chance of going to states this year because I am more experienced when it comes to competing in meets,” Scanlan said.

Coach Michael King has high hopes that with the upcoming freshman, the Streaks will have a better chance of sending the entire team to states.

Luck is a highly anticipated quarterback for the NFL.

Andrew Luck is a senior at Stanford University. Photo courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.

It’s still early to decide who will get the first overall pick of the draft next year, but fans are already campaigning for Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck. Fan-made signs around the league, saying “Suck for Luck” already indicates that the fans have no hope for their team this year. Andrew Luck is a quarterback from Stanford who is most likely going to be the first overall pick of the NFL Draft next year. Having a successful season this year assures this claim and boosts interest in teams around the league. Fans believe that Luck’s ability to throw the ball in the pocket is a perfect fit in the NFL. Teams like the Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings, and the St Louis Rams look like they have given up and are starting to experiment with different players on their team. Their is still a possibility that Luck will stay at Stanford for another year, but fans are hoping that they could have Luck on their team.

Although fans are making it sound like Luck is their savior, it could be one of the biggest busts of the decade. Many elite quarterbacks in the league are late round draft picks, but it is unlikely that Luck would be able to fail that easily in the NFL. Teams with no hope this season could really use Luck right now. It’s also also a coincidence that all of these teams have a major offensive problem. Mainly with the quarterback situation, but also with the offensive line and receivers. All of these problems affect the offense the most and lead the team downhill.

But if these teams got the chance to have Luck, how would they utilize him? How would Luck do with the team given to him? I’ll try to answer these questions, put Luck in the situation, and see how he will do with such a team. The season has not ended yet, these teams could get new players and change their franchise around. The worst team in the NFL will get the first overall pick. Right now these are the contenders.

Miami has had trouble with both sides of the ball this season and are still seeking their first win. Quarterback injuries have set Miami back and now have no chance on coming back this season. Same thing goes for Indianapolis. They had one of the best teams in the NFL, but with their leader gone, it proves that they cannot handle their offense like they have before. Peyton Manning was the control center of that team and the team shut down after he was injured. Minnesota also has their fair share of offensive problems, although having arguably the best running back in the league, Donovan McNabb has disappointed and the Vikings have chosen to experiment with rookie quarterback Christian Ponder. St Louis has a quarterback, but is struggling with the offensive line and receivers. Although if Sam Bradford had the weapons, he could do very well. But if St Louis had the first overall pick, I still think they would pick up Andrew Luck to have a backup behind Bradford for a while.

Stating the problems for these teams I’ll present the problems with each team and hook them up with Andrew Luck, I’ll predict what Luck would do leading up to the situation. Seeing if he would start or be a backup for a while and giving you a detailed inside look on what it would look like if Luck was on that team. Luck has the ability to turn a franchise around, but can he preform when he has the weapons that are presented to him with these five teams? Coaching will also be a factor on how well Luck does and could decide if he does successful or becomes a failure. Before this begins, lets factor out that Luck gets injured during this season with Stanford, becomes in a major legal situation, or doesn’t become the first overall pick for the NFL draft.

The St Louis Rams could really use the help of Andrew Luck right now, although I don’t think they would start Luck immediately. What Luck needs to have in the NFL is experience. If he doesn’t get experience, he won’t be successful in the NFL. Too many years have I seen rookie quarterbacks start for their team and become unsuccessful. Once they become one of those quarterbacks, their hype goes down and most of the time their expected skill level. I think the Rams need to bench him until he gets comfortable with their offense. Get some new offensive linemen and they should be set for a future franchise quarterback. Of course we still have the first round pick Sam Bradford, which the team would hope to be the Rams solution to their passing problems years ago. He started for his first year and proved to the NFL that he could be a quarterback to compete with. Although I don’t see him as great yet, I still think he has a great future in the organization. What the Rams need to do is create a system just like the New England Patriots do with their quarterbacks.

Current Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel was once part of the Patriots quarterback system. He was a very good quarterback at the time and was capable of being a starter for any team in the NFL. But he just wasn’t as good as Tom Brady, so they decided to trade him for a decent deal. This is what the Rams want to do right now. They have two future elite quarterbacks in their hands and they should build them up. Once that is done, they need to choose a franchise quarterback to lead the team to future Super bowls. Although they don’t need a quarterback very badly right now, they could use Luck for the future. Coaching is fine with the Rams and I know that Luck could adapt to their offense quickly. Their system is quite simple and they are a rebuilding team, Luck won’t make changes immediately in St Louis, but he could definitely cause some major changes in a couple of years.

Miami has some major quarterback problems right now. If they get Luck, they need to start him immediately. This will bring his hype down if he doesn’t do well, but it could also boost his career to another level. They have no problem in their receiver core right now since they have one of the top receivers Brandon Marshall. I think overall their chemistry is a real problem right now. You can actually see it in the game. They don’t work together and it brings them losses every week. Leadership needs to come out of this team to be successful with Luck, and with the talents of Luck they could be successful. The longer Luck stays in the pocket, the better he will do. He can get the ball off and win some games, but the problem is how can Miami keep their players consistent. Miami is a hot and cold team over the decade. They never really had a franchise quarterback. Miami is going to have to stick with one quarterback for a couple of years and see how he does. If he doesn’t cause any changes, cut him. But they can’t have injuries and delays to their franchise with swapping quarterbacks every single year.

Indianapolis has already lost hope this season even though they still have another half of a season to go. Getting blown out by one of the largest margins in the NFL this year, the Colts have proved that they cannot preform without the elite Peyton Manning. What makes this amazing is how much of a leader Manning was to the team. If the Colts do get Luck, what they need to do is bench him and learn from Manning. Once Luck can learn off manning and mimic his no huddle offense, then he could be one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in the NFL in no time. Think about it. Andrew Luck has the ability to be a younger Peyton Manning or even better. With the Colts losing games every week, it is very likely to happen that the Colts will pick Luck as their backup quarterback. As seeing their own backups getting injured and demolished, there is no way they wouldn’t pick up Luck if they had the chance to. The combination of Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning can look scary, the question now is how can they stop the duo if they get him. They have the weapons presented to them and Manning coaching Luck is already a weapon upon itself. The Colts will use Luck to keep their reign going when Manning is gone.

The Vikings are a team that is in trouble right now. This is because they have the players to be a playoff team, but their chemistry on the field is absolutely transparent. When you look at a good team you can see that they work together to get a win, but when a team doesn’t work together this results in losses. This is exactly what happened to the Minnesota Vikings. They also have had quarterback problems for the last four years. Like the Miami Dolphins, they experiment with quarterbacks too much. Get a quarterback and stay with him until he fails. They need a leader and won’t hesitate to grab Luck for his abilities and leadership.

If Luck goes into a team like the Vikings, they will most likely start him. What this does is put pressure on Luck. What he needs to do is calm down and stick to his game to make this team successful. He also has a weapon presented to him in rushing and passing. Adrian Peterson is one person that can cause problems. If the Vikings can coach Luck into their system, then he could be a good quarterback, but it will take time for him to turn into an elite quarterback.

Overall, Luck has a good chance with any team in the NFL. What he needs right now is the support of the team he is going to be on and also the experience. If he can get the experience he needs he could be one of the best quarterbacks of all time. It’s been a long time since a quarterback like Luck comes around. Every team needs to look for the chance to get at Andrew Luck and if they do, they need to keep him as long as possible and build him up over the years. People are thinking that Luck could be the next Manning or Elway. Whoever ever gets Luck needs to make these statements come true.

The Penn State football scandal is just one in a long list of collegiate issues this year that's giving that level a bad name.

Penn State head coach Joe Paterno on the sideline prior to a 2006 game. Picture via Wikimedia Commons.

The recent firing of long time and legendary coach Joe Paterno from Penn State University after his knowledge about a sex scandal with one of his former coaches is just another set back for the NCAA. This season has been one that will always be remembered from the Ohio State scandal with the tattoo artist, the Miami University scandal with the booster paying all the players to this incident at Penn State you are left as a fan not knowing that is going on anymore.

At Ohio State the coach Jim Tressel was forced to step down and star quarterback was caught selling items to a tattoo artisit in exchange for quick cash. This a violation of NCAA rules was brought to the attention of Tressel but he didn’t report it to anymore. Along with the OSU Miami was next on the list to fall as a booster of the University was involved with paying recruits to come to the “U”, giving players keys to many sports cars and a boat for their personal pleasure. He even paid for prostitutes for players. This scandal seemed to be the worst as the whole athletic program might be facing the death penalty.

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any worse, the Penn State headlines blanket the news. Penn State President, Athletic Director and many other people have been fired and some are even facing jail time. Most notably has to be long time coach Joe Paterno. After 61 years of coaching and 409 career wins, the most all time, Paterno was fired by Penn State last night for not taking the right steps and reporting what he had information on to the right people. Schools such as UNC and USC have also found themselves in trouble resulting in the firing of both football coaches.

College sports and college football in particular are beloved by so many people across America. No longer do the fans like to watch the over-paid, cocky professional athletes play their respected sports. The passion of the college athletes is what I live for and what is best. These kids are in college, getting an education and laying it all out there on the field as they play, they are not getting money and have nothing to lose. With such scandals the innocent nature of the sports is gone.

College football has taken such a hit this year that when we look back on it, we won’t remember the 9 to 6 win in overtime by the number one ranked LSU Tigers over number two Alabama. This was a game of the ages that was better than any national championship game over the past decade. It was a classic example of two teams, two bitter rivals going at it with nothing to lose and everything to gain. Games like that comprise what college athletics should be all about. No longer do I want to hear about all of the bad stuff that has gone on with these schools. As a fan, you can’t help but think is my team next to be under investigation and in the national spotlight?

The Redskins and the Nationals are two Washington teams that most students here at HHS talk about.

However, does anyone talk about the Capitals?

The Capitals are one of the best teams in the NHL right now and nobody talks about them. That’s interesting because I would think people would be more interested in all the action that is in hockey, but no. That’s not the case.

For one thing, it’s a really fast sport. You don’t even have time to blink or else you’ll probably miss something important. It might sound like a hard sport to watch, but as long as you pay attention, the fast action can be very exciting.

Also, the game barely stops. Here are the things that can stop a hockey game: penalty, offsides, injury, icing, goalie freezes the puck, puck goes outside the rink, the net moves, and when a goal happens. That’s it. It’s just another thing that makes hockey a fast sport.

Another thing is, the hits are much bigger than any other sport. Imagine a hockey player coming out of nowhere and checking you on the boards at ridiculous speeds when you can’t do anything about it. Not to mention there are brutal fights in hockey, and the worst that can happen is that you have to sit in a box for 2 minutes, 5 if the penalty was really serious. After those penalty minutes are up, the player is back on the ice to do more damage.

Those things aside, hockey can be fun to play with friends. All you need is a hockey stick, a puck (or ball), and a net which you can make out of almost anything. You can play hockey on foot, but it’s a lot of fun to play roller hockey so you might want to get some roller skates as well.

Overall, hockey is a really fun sport to watch and play. So give hockey a chance.

Last night the Harrisonburg volleyball team took on the Leemen at the Spotswood district tournament. The Streaks had won a game on Monday to advance to Spotswood, but lost 3-0 against Fort Defiance on Tuesday night. The winner of Thursday’s matchup would decide which team advanced to a regional berth.

The Streaks started off the game with a quick two sets to none lead. As they only play to five sets, the immediate future looked good for the Blue Streaks. Harrisonburg was digging well and setting each other up magnificently and had all of the momentum. But the Leemen were not finished.

R.E. Lee fought back to win the third set and then the fourth set. Suddenly they had forced a fifth set and the game was going down to the wire. The crowd was loud and the energy palpable.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been to a volleyball game as loud as that,” senior Gustaf Nelson said. “The players definitely fed off of the energy.”

But Harrisonburg could not overcome the Leemen’s late game surge and lost the fifth set, ending the Streaks season. The second game of the night was between Turner Ashby and
Fort Defiance to decide the district champion. Fort Defiance won in five sets.
