A little over ten parents clustered around a cafeteria table, as they stared down at the white agenda document in front of them. The clock ticked slowly until the petite hour hand paused at the seven. President of the Streaks club, Cathy Phillips, got up and announced the meeting was about to get started.

The Streaks Club meets the same time about once a month. The other officers in the club are Vicki Johnson, Richard Kelly, Pat Supko and Joe Carico. Each contributes greatly to the Streaks athletic departments.

There are many advantages of being a member of the Streaks Club. They are different levels of the club as well. Each level provides various spirit items for free, but all members get a membership card. This card lets a member have a spirit item whenever the Streaks Club booth is set up. During the Spotswood/HHS volleyball match, the item was a free foam hand. For the Broadway game, there was a free miniature football and the T.A .game will have glow necklaces.

The meeting most always is accommodated with an agenda passed out between the members. Hot chocolate at cross country meets, putting up the numerous signs along Garbers Church Road, and selling items at the football games are different tasks that are assigned on the sheet.

This year the Streaks Club is trying to focus on supporting all of the athletic teams.

“The Streaks Club (formally known as the Booster Club) was recreated this year to build some new excitement and enthusiasm for our Blue Streak Athletes. It is an opportunity for parents and students to become involved in adding spirit to their child’s/students sport. The Streaks Club has made it a goal to create a spirit filled atmosphere for each individual sport here at HHS,” Phillips said.

To get new ideas, the club members meet once a month and exchange thoughts. To stay organized, Phillips writes everything down and forms a list of assignments for the members. A couple of students have attended the meetings including Elizabeth Johnson, Ian Frazier, Timmy Cupp and Drake Cary. The students bring new suggestions that the adult members haven’t thought of.

“One of my favorite ideas that have come from parents was the signs that we have been putting along Garbers Church Rd. on various game days. Mrs. Biller was able to get every house (except two) to agree to let us put signs in their yards. What a great community feeling that creates,” Phillips said.

This year the club changed its name from the Athletic Boosters club to the Streaks club.

“We changed our name because we felt like many people think of only fund raising when you say Boosters. While we do need to fund raise, we can also generate a lot of HHS pride without spending a dime. We wanted to create a spirited and proud Streaks Club,” Phillips said.

The club has many ways to fundraise for their group. One of the main ones is selling a punch card out of the athletic office to save money for home sporting events. The club also has a basketball group coming to the high school.

“A really exciting event will be the comedy basketball group that will be coming on March 10 right here to HHS. This is a different group from last year. This basketball team is called the Harlem Wizards and they have numerous Harlem Globetrotters on their team. This will be a really fun event for everyone,” Phillips said.

Overall, the club’s sole purpose is to find ways to support the high school’s athletic teams. The club is open for anyone to give their ideas and always encourage anyone to become a member.

“We are still looking for those Blue Streak fans to come and join us. Everyone is welcome,” Phillips said.
