SoCal-ing it up

Okay, so this blogging thing is harder than I thought it would be. Sorry to keep all of my eager readers (haha,) waiting.

For the 4th of July weekend, I traveled down to SoCal/LA with my cousin and her husband. We stayed in Calabasas for 2 of the 5 days we were down there, and it was hot as Hades. But that’s okay because Britney Spears lived up the street, and Kourtney Kardashian was just a stone’s throw away. As you can imagine, there was some major creeping on my part.

Sadly, I did not spot any major Hollywood royalty. But I did see Hank Baskett at an LA Ralph’s (the equivalence of a Harrisonburg Martin’s) while he was shopping for bananas with his son, Hank Jr. We made eye contact. And yes, it was awkward. I didn’t realize who it was until my cousin told me in the car. By then it was too late to get a picture, darn. Movie stars are so… normal in real life, and surprisingly short.

Remember how in my last post, I said that I loved San Francisco? Of course you don’t. Well I did. And I also lied. Kind of.

I love love LOVE Los Angeles! Unlike San Francisco, it’s hot and sunny 360 days out of the year. It’s absolutely perfect. In San Francisco, it’s always foggy-ish and cold. Always. I’m going to come back as a chubbed-up pasty-faced outsider among all you tanned gods/goddesses. Training for cross country season will be a major struggle.

The food, oh Lordly, the food in LA is fabulous. Namely the sushi and frozen yogurt. I had never had sushi as good as what I had at Ozumo, a Japanese sushi restaurant. Look it up, it’s great. I ate almost the entirety of a Dragon roll platter and half of a California roll platter. I’m such a fatty. I have come to the conclusion that I like eel, and that we need a fro-yo bar in Harrisonburg, which are ubiquitous in LA and San Fran.

The SoCal beaches are also pretty jammin’. We spent a day at Zuma Beach in Malibu, and it was fantastic. The water was a bit on the cold side, but it was all okay once you went numb and couldn’t feel anything.

We also saw Cher’s house- it was right on the beach- but no Cher. Boohoo. Celebrities are good at hiding.

We had the opportunity to take a drive through Beverly Hills and West Hollywood. My cousin’s husband used to live in LA, so he showed me Sunset Boulevard and Rodeo Drive. He pointed out Grauman’s Chinese theater and the venue where the Golden Globes are normally held, which is coincidentally, right next door to his old apartment building. I would also like to add that I spelled “coincidentally” right on my first try, and did not use spellcheck. Thank you, thank you, *blows kisses*.

I’m definitely going to remember Southern California, and I was sad to go, but I have these fabulous photos to remember it by. I’m so proud that I actually managed to get pictures. I hope you’re proud of me too.
